about

“Oh my gosh is that a Belle and Sebastian patch?!” exclaimed Talia to Rupert’s younger sister Franny, pointing at the Stars of Track and Field patch on her bag. “They are my favourite band of all time!” (Rupert would soon learn that this was in fact a white lie, Joanna Newsome is Talia’s favourite artist.) It was the summer of 2023, and the siblings were ordering food from the Big Wheel burger on the of corner Cook and Mckenzie. Talia was taking the order. After a short conversation revealing their shared tastes in music, Talia and Rupert exchanged info about where they could listen to each other’s tunes. The next day, Rupert, after listening to and thoroughly enjoying “sorry, Little Bird” was trying to figure out a way to contact Talia when out of the blue she messaged “HI mr teenage art scene” to Rupert on facebook. The following conversation revealed the fact that they happened to know all the same people and had crossed paths many times over the years without realizing. Time went by and after meeting up at Talia’s house to change guitar strings/have dinner and going to see Peanut Butter Telephone at fernfest together, The decision was made that the pair should work on a song together. The two intrepid songwriters met up at Teenage Art Scene HQ (Rupert’s house) and began working together on a collaborative song in Stratosphere Studios (Rupert’s bedroom). Inspired by a recent rear ending of Talia’s car on the way to see Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City, and some hijinks involving Talia’s bike ride over, The most dynamic of duos wrote and recorded the track “Get off the Road”. The two would continue to record together eventually settling on the idea of a collaborative EP. Things were moving along nicely and tracks were coming together. But then, disaster struck! Talia moved to Vancouver for university. (For those who may not be familiar with the geography of the west coast of BC, Victoria is located at the southernmost point on Vancouver island and Vancouver is located on the mainland. The two cities are very geographically close but are separated by a long cumbersome ferry ride.) The two were forced to record when they could over holidays and breaks from their respective post secondary institutions. Through this patch work of writing and recording sessions, the two managed to finish their EP at long last.

Now, presented before you, the dear listener, is the conclusion of this story, an EP entitled “Get off the Road”.
